A student enrolled at a university in other countries that has a student-exchange agreement with OKU can study at OKU as an exchange student for one to two semesters (six months to one year).
Exchange students should arrive in October.

Japanese Studies Students

The Japanese government (the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology: MEXT) offers scholarships to international students who wish to study at designated Japanese universities to deepen their understanding of Japanese language, Japanese affairs, and Japanese culture as Japanese Studies Students under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship Program. Its aim is to foster human resources that become bridges of friendship between the scholarship recipient’s country and Japan through study in Japan, and who will contribute to the development of both countries and the wider world.
Applicants can apply for either one of the procedures described below (Embassy or University Recommendation). For details, please refer to the website of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Embassy Recommendation: an applicant is initially screened by the Japanese embassy or consulate in the country of the applicant’s nationality. The applicants who pass the initial screening are recommended by the Japanese embassy or consulate to MEXT. MEXT conducts the final screening and determines the scholarship recipients.
University Recommendation: with the recommendation by OKU’s partner universities under the student-exchange agreement, OKU’s Candidate Selection Committee examines the documents of the recommended applicants and interviews them to select candidates. The committee then recommends the candidates to MEXT, and MEXT conducts the final screening and determines the recipients.

Teacher Training Students

The Japanese government (the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology: MEXT) offers scholarships to international teachers who wish to conduct research on school education at designated Japanese universities as Teacher Training Students under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship Program. Applicants must be graduates of universities or teacher training schools and work as teachers at primary/ secondary educational institutions or teacher training schools in their countries.

Embassy Recommendation: the Japanese embassy or consulate in the country of an applicant’s nationality conducts initial screening for candidate selection. MEXT conducts the final screening on the recommended candidates and determines recipients.

Research Students

An international student who wishes to conduct research in a specific field at our university can apply as a Research Student who will be enrolled after screening and has received guidance from our academic advisor. The research duration is for one to two semesters (six months to one year) in the academic year during which the students are admitted. Research Students can earn no credits. Research Students are selected, after examining each applicant’s submitted documents and personal interviews (including oral examination). The applicants also must receive letters of provisional acceptance beforehand from academic advisors under whom the applicants will study. The Global Center does not accept any requests by e-mail to introduce professors and their offices or laboratories. Applicants can search and browse the research fields and achievements of our university’s teaching staff on the “Researcher Database”.

International Research Students Under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship Program

International Research Students conduct research at our graduate school under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship Program.
They should be university graduates and, if necessary, receive preliminary Japanese language education for six months after arrival (when a student’s proficiency in Japanese is at a satisfying level, it is unnecessary).
Applicants can apply for either one of the procedures described below (Embassy or University Recommendation). For details, please refer to the website of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
Embassy Recommendation: an applicant is initially screened by the Japanese embassy or consulate in the country of the applicant’s nationality. The applicants who pass the initial screening should directly contact the Japanese university in which the applicant wishes to enroll before the end of August, acquire a letter of provisional acceptance and submit it to the Japanese embassy or consulate. MEXT conducts the final screening of the recommended candidates and determines the scholarship recipients.
University Recommendation: with the recommendation by OKU’s partner universities under the student-exchange agreement, OKU’s Candidate Selection Committee examines the documents of the recommended applicants and interviews them to select candidates. The committee then recommends the candidates to MEXT, and MEXT conducts the final screening and determines the recipients.
